BOTOX® Cosmetic is a prescription medicine used to temporarily reduce moderate to severe wrinkles on the face, specifically lines on the forehead, the lines between the brows and the crow’s feet around the eyes. The treatment is non-surgical and administered through an injection directly into the muscles. BOTOX® Cosmetic is a botulinum toxin approved by the FDA to temporarily treat these wrinkles. Since Botox injections are non-surgical, they require no recovery time.
When injected, Botox blocks nerve impulses to reduce muscle activity that causes wrinkles. When the muscles can no longer retract, they relax. When they relax, the wrinkles also relax and soften. Usually, patients need four to six days after injection to begin to see the effects of Botox. The results usually last three to four months. In general, most patients require another Botox injection treatment once lines begin to reappear. However, with each subsequent Botox injection, wrinkles that return are typically less and less severe.
If you are not ready for an invasive face or brow lift procedure but want to smooth out the wrinkles around your brow and eyes, you may be a good candidate for Botox. Botox can also work well as a supplemental treatment for those receiving other cosmetic procedures like skin resurfacing.
Usually you will begin to see improvement within a few days for moderate-to-severe lines. The lines will continue to be reduced over the course of 30 days.
While results vary, they can last up to 4 months.
Typically the discomfort is minimal, if at all. The entire procedure requires only minutes, and most patients are in and out without any downtime.
